Architects’ unemployment back on the rise

  • Comment

Unemployed architects increased in July bucking a recent trend which saw claimants fall in number for five consecutive months

There are now 825 architects claiming jobseekers allowance – signalling an increase of 80 architect dole claimants between June and July, according to the latest NOMIS government statistics.

The grand total is still 40 per cent below the August 2009 peak in architectural unemployment when 2,055 were claiming benefits. The increase came as total UK unemployment fell by around 46,000 to 2.56 million in the three months to June.

The full depth of joblessness is thought to be greater with many architects either unable to sign on or temporarily working in other fields to support themselves.
