Architects sought for Ancoats Dispensary rescue plan

  • Comment

The Ancoats Dispensary Trust is on the hunt for an architect to restore its Grade II-listed hospital building which was recently threatened with demolition

A conservation architect is sought to transform the iconic Ancoats Dispensary into a 1,485m² arts and community hub.

The project comes a year after Urban Splash abandoned controversial plans to demolish the crumbling nineteenth century structure which featured in one of LS Lowry’s paintings.

Planned to complete in 2018, the latest project will create a new 1st floor café inside the Old Mill Street building with artisan workspaces on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

An interpretation centre is also planned for the 4th floor tower of the former hospital which first opened in 1828.

The £200,000 contract will be let in two parts with the first stage focussing on safeguarding works and design development up to RIBA stage D.

The second stage covering delivery on site is due to start in 2017 and will be subject to Heritage Lottery Funding.

The Ancoats Dispensary Trust was set up three years ago to campaign against the building’s demolition.

Originally known as the Ardwick and Ancoats Hospital, the building is currently structurally sound but without a roof and open to the elements.

According to the trust’s website ownership of the former hospital will transfer from the developer to the trust when funding for the complete restoration is secured.

The deadline for requests to participate is 29 August.
