and his griping is self-interested and childish

Ooh-er, isn't Will Alsop throwing his toys out of the pram (AJ 25.10.01)?

If his column was intended to be tongue-in-cheek, it comes across as more foot-in-mouth!

Perhaps the sun got to him before he made it under the sunshade in Tuscany.

Otherwise I cannot remember reading a more vain and arrogant piece of whingeing: the apparent outpourings of a spoilt child! The possibility that a competition jury might find any submission other than his own more to their taste would seem a concept impossible for him to accept.

Incidentally, with reference to his snipe at committees, the MCC, hitherto regarded as reactionary, does not seem to have done too badly for itself, or architecture, by the developments it has carried out at Lord's Cricket Ground in the past 10 or so years! His griping about the competition system would have more point if it stressed that too few winning entries in this country seem actually to get built.

It is to be hoped that not too many 'lay' persons read your journal or they may find any opinions they might have held about architects reinforced.

With friends like theseà Tristan York, London W13
