American Modern 1925-1940: Design for a New Age

review

American Modern is the copiously-illustrated catalogue for an exhibition which has just opened at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it continues until early January 2001. More than 100 objects, each given a page to itself, make a glamorous record of, above all, the US pursuit of streamlining in the inter-war years. Kem Weber's Zephyr clock (above left) looks perfect for the bedside table; the ice gun (above right), its designer unknown, could be a Duchamp 'ready-made'.
