Alsop paintings on show at London hospital

Will Alsop will open a show of his paintings this week at the South Kensington and Chelsea Mental Health Centre

Alsop has been involved with The Nightingale Project, the charity organising the exhibition, since 2007 as patron. In the past year, Alsop has led a series of workshops with inpatients at St Charles hospital in North Kensington, where he co-created a set of large paintings which now hang on the ward there.

The latest exhibition features work in acrylic on canvas and paper, including work from ‘Four Seasons’ a series of paintings which depict a concept for the inside of a town hall in Italy and ‘Hotel Life’ a special limited edition digital print.

Alsop famously stepped down from Alsop Architects in August 2009 to ‘spend more time painting’.

In November 2009 he took a high profile position at international practice RMJM. Alsop later admitted that the comments about pursuing his paintings were a ‘ruse’: a smokescreen to divert attention from his top-secret negotiations around his move to commercial giant RMJM.
