Stirling prize winner Alsop & Stormer has struck gold for the second time in a fortnight by winning a competitive interview to design a new £17 million centre for art and design in Toronto, writes Sophie Kernon.
The practice will join Toronto-based architect Robbie/Young + Wright on the project, which will be funded by the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) and include the redevelopment of existing facilities on site.
OCAD's dean of the faculty of design Lenore Richards said: 'The originality and sophistication that Alsop & Stormer has demonstrated in previous design projects is outstanding. The boldness in its vocabulary of form, materials and colour results in buildings that are both engaging and extraordinarily memorable.'
Alsop said: 'Not only will it be my first project in North America, but it will also be a college of art and design, which is very close to my heart.'
News of the job comes just a week after Alsop & Stormer was awarded the £20,000 Stirling Prize for building of the year, for Peckham Library in south London.
