Alsop Architects and Hudson Featherstone are to fight it out to develop a commercial scheme in Peckham Square, adjacent to Alsop's Stirling Prize-winning library.
Southwark council invited developers to submit ideas for the site, currently a disused timber yard, with very little guidance. 'We've provided a health centre and a library; we now think a commercial scheme would work, ' Peckham's director of regeneration and environment Fred Manson told the AJ.
Hudson Featherstone, working with Baylight Property, is proposing a performance centre and housing, with a large plasma screen enabling the square to be used as an open-air cinema.
'The detail of the scheme hasn't been worked out yet but we've tried to create a very strong architectural form which will work with [the library] rather than against it, 'Anthony Hudson said.
Alsop's scheme, being developed with Urban Catalyst, was still under wraps as the AJ went to press. Both schemes will be put on public display later this month.
