[FIRST LOOK] Allies and Morrison has submitted a planning application for this £80 million mixed-use scheme above a Docklands Light Rail (DLR) station in Woolwich, south London
The over-site development features a seven-storey 96-room hotel and a 16-storey residential tower.
According to the practice: ‘The tower aims to provide a new local landmark, signalling the location of the new Woolwich transport interchange.’
The DLR was recently extended to Woolwich from nearby King George V station. The station opened in January 2009.

CABE is pleased to support this planning application, which promises to deliver a high quality development for Woolwich town centre. We welcome the approach to developing the site by locating new shops at ground floor level and creating two related but distinct buildings to house a hotel, in a mid-rise block along the street, and new homes in a tower behind. We also admire the simple, rigorous architectural approach. The one area where we think further design investigation could improve the scheme is the architectural resolution of the junction between the hotel and residential buildings on Spray Street. We have every confidence in the skills of the design team to achieve this.
As the scheme proceeds towards construction, the quality of detailing and materials will be crucial to its success. The developer will therefore need to ensure that the high standard of design and rigour of these proposals are maintained through to implementation on site. The local authority should also play their part by conditioning materials and key architectural details to protect design quality.
