[First look] These are the latest images of Allies and Morrison’s £250 million twin-towers project at Vauxhall in south London
The mixed-use scheme for developer CLS Holdings, features two residential towers, a hotel, cinema, community garden and an 15,114m² office block.
Two student accommodation towers, an affordable housing block and a homeless shelter are also planned.
The 1.2 ha site is within the London mayor’s Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area which is tipped for massive regeneration with 16,000 new homes and up to 25,000 new jobs expected.
Foster + Partners and Neil Tomlinson Architects’ £1 billion New Covent Garden Market redevelopment masterplan is next door and was submitted for outline planning consent last week. Kieran Timberlake’s competition-winning new US Embassy proposal is also nearby.
Allies and Morrison’s scheme features 604 residential units and a new public square. Four Grade II-listed houses will be retained within the site.
Last month it emerged Terry Farrell and Partners had been appointed by Lambeth Council to work on a strategy for the future of Vauxhall Cross road interchange which is plagued by heavy road traffic and next door to the skyscrapers’ proposed site.
A £20 million skywalk project – linked to CLS Holdings’ development – was shelved in June but Marks Barfield Architects has been appointed to draw up plans for an alternative street-level scheme in the area.
A detailed planning application for the skyscrapers is expected to be submitted to local authority Lambeth Council in mid December.
Allies and Morrison is also masterplanning the 2.5 hectare redevelopment of a Royal Mail depot nearby which was redesigned following criticism from DC CABE.
