All bets off

The excitement of real betting on the Stirling for the first time was tempered by the disappointment of not being able to get a bet on two days before the announcement.

William Hill suspended betting on the Thursday, after what it presumably regarded as a suspicious amount of money being placed on Caruso St John's Walsall Art Gallery. Astragal told the local bookmaker that the judging would not take place until the Saturday evening, but to no avail. In the event, since outsider Peckham Library won, the bookies will have made a tidy sum. Alsop won't be making anything from the award, having announced that he will give half the £20,000 prize to the AA, his alma mater (most of the shortlisted schemes are by ex-AA folk), and half towards a big party.
