AJ120 #=102: GRID Architects

25 employed architects, 24% female architects, new entry

Founded half a decade ago during the midst of the recession, the residential specialist started with no overdraft or borrowing and now employs 64 permanent staff. Director Craig Casci says the firm has grown on average 30 per cent per year – 38 per cent in 2014 – and recently opened a second London studio on the South Bank. Fueling the practice’s growth has been demand for private rental sector flats, of which it is one of the main providers. While some of its high-rise designs are divisive – plans for a 24-storey residential unit in Swiss Cottage were knocked back by councillors, despite gaining the approval of planning officers – significant projects include Marine Wharf in Lewisham and Stanmore Place in Harrow for developer St Edward, and 70 Horseferry Road for Barratt Homes.
