Leading industry figures are coming together to discuss ways of demonstrating the economic worth of good design at the AJ/RIBA Conference next week (18 June). Julia Barfield will explain how Marks Barfield commissioned Arup to carry out an Economic Impact Study into the London Eye's impact on business and employment as part of the bid to extend the project's planning permission.
She will also look at ways in which architects can protect their ideas - the practice has recently patented its Skyhouse design for three connected towers.Richard Murphy will discuss the way in which architects can work with clients at the outset of a project to refine the brief and hence drastically reduce costs.
