AJ boosts reader services with online information

  • Comment

The aj goes online today with the launch of AJPlus at www.ajplus.co.uk. Designed to complement rather than duplicate the magazine, AJPlus combines selected material from aj back issues with information which is unique to the website.

News coverage will be updated several times a day, providing a constant stream of headline news to supplement the magazine's more in-depth weekly coverage. Buildings coverage will include past articles from the aj. The on-line buildings bank kicks off with the 500 buildings featured in the aj during 1999, ranging from picture captions to in-depth building studies, complete with cost analyses and working details. Buildings are searchable by architect, building name, building type, design topic, or by geographical location. The buildings bank will also be updated regularly to produce a comprehensive record of architecturally outstanding modern- day buildings in the uk.

In addition to the buildings bank, AJPlus has its own series, 'Building Angles', in which architects talk about buildings which have influenced them. Architects interviewed so far include Ian Simpson, Rab Bennetts, Sarah Wigglesworth and Robin Snell.

Visitors can also search the online product directory which starts with a base of 50-100,000 entries and will be updated with an estimated 250 product launches each week, find out what's new in standards, browse through the crc booklist, or search the 800+ jobs featured on the ConstructionPlus recruitment pages.

The cd-rom included in this issue provides access to the AJPlus Internet Service Provider. A short registration procedure gives free Internet access (just pay call charges at local rates), e-mail, and 20 megabytes of webspace to allow readers to set up their own web pages. Anyone who signs up by 31 March will be entered in our prize draw for £3000 of holiday vouchers.

AJPlus is part of a free website, ConstructionPlus, which spans the entire construction industry from architects and contractors to clients and has specialist portals linked to Emap Construct's three major titles, Construction News, New Civil Engineer, and the AJ. The result of more than a year's detailed planning, research and development, ConstructionPlus is Emap's biggest and most ambitious Internet development anywhere in the world and will strengthen its position in the industry. Construction industry e-commerce is forecast to be worth more than £1 billion a year by 2003.
