AFL's Crystal Palace plans unsettles Spurs Olympic move

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] AFL has reveal plans to build a new £50 million football stadium for Crystal Palace close to the site of its original South London home

The proposed 40,000 seat stadium in Crystal Palace park would ‘breathe new life’ in to the neighbouring National Sports Centre (NSC) but could, unusually, threaten Tottenham Hotspurs’ proposed move to the Olympic Stadium.

Spurs, with architects KSS, want to overhaul the Olympic showpiece in East London after the 2012 Games converting it into a football only venue while promising to revamp the dilapidated NSC as part of its commitment to retaining athletics in the capital.

A rival bid by West Ham United FC would keep athletics at the £496 million, Populous-designed Olympic stadium.

The Crystal Palace bid will see them move from their Selhurst Palace stadium - the club’s home since 1924 - into a new, initially 25,000 capacity ground as well as creating a new, underground aquatic centre, reconfigured indoor sports complex within the NSC and a new community athletics facility.

A decision on whether Spurs or West Ham has succeeded in taking over the Olympic landmark is expected this Friday.

  • It seems Bromley have already torn up the Crystal Palace Park masterplan even though it took six years to put together and only received final approval last week. Makes you wonder why people even bothered in the first place.

Putting a 40,000 seater stadium in the middle of the park double the size of the NSC wasn't part of the plan and if everyone got worked up over a few houses being built to pay it looks like mroe years of work and another public inquiry will be in the offing.

Whoever did the rendering did a superb job of colouring in all the car parks and roads
