AF launches Stratford kiosks competition

The Architecture Foundation has launched an international design competition for a series of permanent kiosks at Meridian Square, Stratford

The winning kiosks will be built outside Stratford Station, serving as information points for the Olympic City. The brief is for designs that are ‘innovative yet realisable.’

The international competition, which the foundation on is running on behalf of Newham Council, is open to entries from architects, designers, artists, product designers, and related disciplines.

Judges include: Sarah Wigglesworth; Philip Singleton of Newham Council; Eleanor Fawcett of Design for London; Christophe Egret of Studio Egret West; David Sterry of Transport for London and Sarah Ichioka, director of The Architecture Foundation

Philip Singleton said: ‘I want the result of this competition to strengthen the arrival experience into Stratford for visitors to the 2012 Olympic Games and beyond. In response to this brief, we are looking for exceptional, flexible and creative designs, which respond to the planned redevelopment of Meridian Square, and the regeneration of the broader area.’

A shortlist will be announced in June with each shortlisted team receiving £1,500 to take their projects to RIBA stage D. The public will be invited to comment on the designs during an exhibition of the entries at the London Design Festival, 18 to 26 September.

The winning team, set to be revealed in October, will supervise its project through to RIBA stage L. The competition is sponsored by Design for London.
