Aedas bags Chinese tower contest

Aedas has won the competition to design a tower scheme in a major entertainment district planned for Shanghai

The practice, which has offices in London, Shanghai and 24 other cities across the world, will design the Xuhui Binjian Media City 188S-G-1 Tower and Podium.

The 70,000m² scheme for Shanghai Building Materials will be built within a nine-block development dominated by Hollywood film studio DreamWorks Animation.

While the Aedas tower will have an extruded rectangular plan, the west wall will be gradually warped in elevation to accommodate the subway setback that cuts off the corner of the otherwise square site.

The north wall will be warped to give views of DreamWorks sites and other neighbouring blocks.

Aedas said the tower’s glazing – groups of three glass panels randomly angled in one of four directions – would reflect light like a diamond.

This will ‘mimick the shimmering quality of a media screen’ according to the practice.

The tower will be independent to the podium, and meet the ground to allow circulation around its base. The podium will serve as a public green space.

Aedas chairman Keith Griffiths last week told AJ of increased demand in China for mixed-use schemes.

‘All [our] projects create modern day communities in which people can enjoy a revolutionary work and life dynamic that is emerging in the new China cities,’ he said.
