[First look] Global practice Aecom with Brisbane-based Malcolm Middleton Architects has completed a new visitor attraction on Australia’s Gold Coast

The project to create a visitor centre and recreational spaces for the Hinze Dam is part of a Aus$395million (£265million) upgrade to the Queensland fresh water tourist attraction.

The dam offers a range of outdoor activities including fishing, kayaking, horse riding and bush walking, and is a popular location for weddings.

Aecom practice director James Dorrat said: ‘The response focused on enhancing visitors’ experience through demonstrating and educating visitors on the processes of water.

‘The timber-clad function room of the visitor centre allows breathtaking 180-degree views of the dam and adjacent parklands, setting a benchmark of design for the local eco-tourism industry.’
