Adam wins green light for traditional village expansion

An extension to a Somerset village by classicists Adam Architecture has been approved by Mendip District Council

The traditional-styled proposals for an expansion of Norton St Philip, which is about nine miles south of Bath, were recommended unanimously by district and parish council officials.

With about 300 homes currently, many of which are listed and sat within a conservation area, Norton St Philip will get an additional 51 houses, a shop, market building and commercial office space, which would replace a derelict chicken processing factory. Work is expected to get under way on the project in the next nine to 12 months.

Robert Adam, of Adam Architecture, said: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to add to this beautiful and charming place. We’ve worked with its character and created new streets full of variety and interest.’

Work on the scheme for developer Lochailort Investments should start on site within the year.

  • Facadism, trad-faddism and histori-genuflection of the worst possible type. Somebody of influence should have tried to nobble Mendip County Council before this was pushed through planning !
