The opening of the exhibition 'Robert Adam: the Creative Mind' at the National Gallery of Scotland on 5 February is a gentle reminder, in Glasgow's year of architecture, that one of the first truly international styles, the 'corrected' Neo-Classicism of the brothers Adam, had its roots in Enlightenment Edinburgh. Drawn from the great Adam archive at Sir John Soane's Museum, the exhibition appeals for two reasons. Firstly, it ends Summerson's iron rule to lend nothing to anyone, and secondly, it makes up for the lack of material on Scotland's Neo-Classical revolution in the headline-grabbing new Museum of Scotland. 'It isn't so much that one of Scotland's greatest cultural achievements is skimmed over,' lamented one of the exhibition's organisers, 'more a matter of there not being anything there at all.'
