CABE has called for advertising on phone boxes to be brought under planning control. The commission called the adverts 'eyesores' and said their removal would be an 'important step' towards improved public spaces. 'People feel that they have lost ownership of the streets outside their front doors, ' said CABE chief executive Jon Rouse. Why should they be affronted with unwanted corporate advertising every time they want to make a telephone call or simply walk to the local shops?'

CABE made its comments in response to a consultation paper on the matter launched by the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions.
