Acanthus LW completes Haggerston station

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Acanthus LW Architects has completed this new train station at Haggerston for the East London Line (ELL) upgrade project

The scheme is part of the £1.4 billion upgrade to the London Overground which also includes Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton and Dalston Junction.

The sandstone coloured precast concrete structure with stainless steel entrance canopy features towers on the Lee Street frontage which house the main vertical services risers and access ladders.

According to the practice, the internal routes to platforms are designed to minimise changes of direction and create a simple circulation flow.

The station features a Tod Hanson-designed public artwork piece based on Haggerston-born astronomer Edmond Halley.

The platform canopies feature tapered cantilevered ribs with integrated frieze trunking, which run above a glazed screen at the rear of the platforms.

Acanthus LW also designed the new depot buildings at New Cross gate. The Chiswick-based practice’s canopy and lighting boom design was used on all the ELL stations.

  • Too imposing - scale of building and lift tower (??) too big. Bland finish, probably a nice canvas for some graffiti, a rather dull homage to London Yellow Stocks. Not integrated with Stonebridge Gardens. Not sure if Gulag style fence to east side is part of design
