Acanthus LW Architects has completed this 588m2 cricket pavilion in Stone, Dartford
Originally conceived as a replacement for a 124-year-old structure, the £860,325 project grew to include refurbishing the existing Veteran’s Hall, new community facilities and offices for Stone Parish Council.
The architect’s view
the building was conceived as a distinctive closed box which opens during use to reveal bright interior spaces. Extensively utilised, a broad range of community activities take place, concealed behind the outer walls. An enclosed internal courtyard permits daylight and offers visual transparency between rooms; it’s not unusual to witness ballroom dancers gliding past the courtyard whilst working in the council chambers.
Sustainable technologies are integrated throughout the building, most significantly with solar thermal preheating supplying hot water and partial under floor space heating. The construction methodology takes advantage of prefabrication, minimising disruptive time on site and offering a high quality finish to these components. Robust materials and anti-climb profiles are applied to the design, affording a degree of resilience during unoccupied hours.
A prominent ‘floating’ roof shrouds the building beneath and offers shelter to spectators viewing cricket from the raised terrace. The distinct yellow façade employs a crisp ‘bar code’ decoration, reflected in the spacing of the columns and the balustrade. This lends Stone Pavilion a strong visual identity, contrasting with the adjacent masonry hall, providing a focal point to the local community.
