One of the ironies about the 'gherkin' winning the prize, lost on very few in the room on the night, was the absence of credits for key ex-Foster designers who worked on the project, particularly Ken Shuttleworth and Robin Partington. This is always one of those tricky situations, especially when former staff may well be in commercial competition with you for the next big office tower.

Virtually everyone else involved with the project got a mention from Norman, particularly Swiss Re's force-of-nature client representative, Sara Fox, and the City of London planning officer, Peter Rees. It was Rees who suggested a taller tower in order to cut back from the site boundary, thus providing some welcome public space.
