a:b:i:r architects lands planning for Polegate health centre

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + PROJECT DATA] a:b:i:r architects has won planning for this primary care resource centre and residential scheme at Polegate, East Sussex

The 1,989m² centre will house two GP practices and a pharmacy. The scheme also features six affordable apartments, two of which are wheel-chair accessible.

According to the Brighton-based practice: ‘The proposed layout and form reflect the long and narrow nature of the site and the design is a concious attempt to get away from the monolithic architecture of the existing building by responding to the wider site context.’

The project replaces a derelict two-storey care home with pitched roof on the site.

Internally spaces are north or south-facing, and a central void lights the waiting area. Shared spaces located towards the south west part of the building overlook a grade II-listed windmill.

Simon Atkins, Olli Blair, Giles Ings and Matthew Richardson founded a:b:i:r architects in 2009.
