A449 wins planning for 'Star Trek' house

  • Comment

Up and coming practice a449 has won planning permission for this 240m² home in the Scottish Borders

The private house in a conservation area in Gattonside, near Melrose features a single storey ‘family space’ which sits above a glazed element on the sloping site.

The project, which was descirbed by one local councillor as like ‘something from a Star Trek film’, is expected to start on site in September.

The architect’s view - Matthew Johnson

Although of contemporary design the proposal pays strong reference to the traditional built form and materials of the Scottish Borders, which was key in gaining the support of the planners. The concept is based on an enclosed courtyard formed logically to take advantage of afternoon and evening sun and offer protection from the prevailing winds.
The main family space is in a single storey element with a highly glazed south elevation to take advantage of the view. To the north and above the main space is a timber clad two storey element accommodating bedrooms and bathrooms.
The clarity of the built form is maintained with a simple but high quality palette of materials, namely grey stained larch, smooth white render and natural slate.
