A new bolt-on bigboy for the National Theatre?

Astragal has been hearing rumours of a major new extension at the NT

The off-stage whispers are growing louder about a possible major extension to the National Theatre as part of Haworth Tompkins’ masterplan for Denys Lasdun’s Grade II-listed building and the surrounding areas.

The practice started with a ‘Conservation Management Plan’ last year for the Thames-side landmark (opened 1975) and is now working on the ‘masterplan’ (having seen off Mr Chipperfield et al last December). Exact details are scarce but the practice certainly seems to be taking a long time if it is only planning something minor.

It’s ‘early days’ yet, according to pretty much everyone involved, but look out for the official announcement later in the year. You heard it here first.
