Backed by the Erich Schelling Foundation and Germany’s University of Karlsruhe, the prize has previously been awarded to Peter Zumthor, Zaha Hadid, and Coop Himmelb(l)au.
6a is one of three international practices nominated for the high-profile €20,000 prize gong, including Germany’s AFF and Al Borde of Ecuador.
In a statement, the Schelling foundation said: ‘6a architects illustrate their projects with a sophisticated treatment of space, light and material, but also the history of place. Their work surprises with lightness and originality without losing sight of its seriousness.’
The winner will be announced on 14 November.
Kenneth Frampton has meanwhile bagged the Architecture Theory Prize. The foundation said: ‘His theoretical range encompasses a vastness that no other prominent thinker in architecture has yet achieved.’
