£4.5m refurbishment for Newcastle Central Station

  • Comment

A major part of Newcastle's Grade I-listed Central Station is to be restored to its late-Victorian splendour by Railtrack in a scheme designed by York architect Briggs Potts Parry, writes John Griffiths.

The £4.5 million proposals, which have been given 'minded to grant' approval by Newcastle City Council, involve demolition of the 1950s control and relay rooms, described by the North East Civic Trust as 'one of the worst modern additions to any listed buildings in the city', and the restoration of the glazed arched roof of the south trainshed.
