30 St. Mary Axe by Foster + Partners

  • Comment

[OPEN HOUSE] 30 St Mary Axe, the London headquarters of insurance company Swiss Re is one of more than 50 projects taking part in Open House London featured in the Library

The winner of the 2004 RIBA Stirling Prize has a distinctive form generated by its radial plan. The energy-conscious enclosure resolves walls and roof into a continuous triangulated skin, topped with a glazed dome that allows 360º views across the city.

The tapered shape of the tower gives the building a small footprint (just under 50m across), that does not occupy the whole of the site allowing the remaining space at ground level to be used as a public square.
