Cartwright Pickard Architects' £2 million affordable housing scheme in York (above) gets under way this week. Portakabin subsidiary Yorkon is to erect the 24 urgently-needed apartments on a brownfield site, representing the first factory-built low-cost housing project outside London. The steelframed development will be configured in an L shape, creating a private landscaped courtyard. Each elevation will be built in western red cedar.
