10 Design trumps Zaha to land China library job

[First look] Hong Kong-based 10 Design has beaten Kengo Kuma and Associates, Hopkins Architects and this year’s Stirling Prize winner Zaha Hadid Architects to land a 55,400m² public library in Dalian, China

The scheme, led by studio design partner Ted Givens, is described as a ‘transformative environment’ by the architect and features a large media centre which can operate for 24 hours a day.

The six-storey structure also features a rooftop café and oversized window which looks out over the ocean.

Dalian is China’s northernmost warm water port and has a long tradition of representing international styles of architecture. The municipal authority has commissioned a number of large-scale projects including an international conference centre by Coop Himmelb(l)au and a RMJM-designed sports centre.

The library triumph came shortly after 10 Design won another contest to design a 93 hectare waterfront central business district development (pictured), also in China.

The project includes the architectural design for a ‘Cross Straights Forum’ building aimed at boosting dialogue between Taiwan and the mainland.  The design features a convention and exhibition centre and supporting mixed use accommodation. The design was led by 10 Design partner Gordon Affleck.

The company was set up in December last year following the departure of several high profile names from RMJM.
