Stephenson Bell’s finishes new foyer at former GMEX

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Stephenson Bell has completed the second phase of its £20 million overhaul of the Manchester Central international convention centre, formerly the GMEX

Replacing a dated 1980s entrance, the new glazed foyer sits in front of a Grade II*-listed building once used as a train shed/station. As well as reception facilities, it houses new flexible exhibition spaces and a ‘tenated’ restaurant.

According to the practice, the sandstone-clad scheme ‘replicates a similar facade language to the adjacent exchange foyer’ with the new projecting cantilever canopy ‘bringing the centre closer to the public realm’.

Phase three, to create a new restaurant and seminar space behind the main hall to the north, will complete in September this year.
