AJ deputy editor Rory Olcayto and AJ Buildings Library editor Tom Ravenscroft both picked up gongs at the 2013 IBP Awards

AJ deputy editor Rory Olcayto was named the ‘clear winner’ of the prestigious International Building Press (IBP) Architecture Writer of the Year 2013 award, as he picked up the gong for the second time in three years.
The judges were impressed with his ‘subtle dismantling of his subjects’ often inflated reputations, coupled with a very engaging writing style.’
They said: ‘He writes not just about buildings, but also about the underlying issues.’
AJ Buildings Library editor Tom Ravenscroft meanwhile took the coveted Multi-Media Journalist of the Year prize.
He ‘impressed’ the judges ‘in particular with the small projects awards – a true example of multi-platform journalism, straddling print, web and social media.
‘The judges felt he had really championed the AJ’s web first model and were impressed with the overall quality and quantity of his output, including his features about Bristol.’
In total the AJ was shortlisted for eight gongs at the annual awards that took place last week (21 November) at the Four Seasons on Park Lane, London.

AJ deputy editor Rory Olcayto has been named IBP Architecture Writer of the Year
The AJ Buildings Library was also highly commended at the annual International Building Press (IBP) awards which took place last night in Chelsea Football Club, London.
He beat shortlisted rivals Eleanor Young of RIBA Journal and Architects’ Journal’s Steve Parnell to bag the coveted gong which came with a £500 prize.
The judges said his submitted pieces were ‘very readable and revealed interesting insights’ adding that Olcayto ‘regularly delivers strong articles for his magazine.’
Meanwhile the AJ Buildings Library was highly commended in the Website of the Year category. The judges described it as a ‘valuable, new and unique resource aimed at architects’ and a ‘great compliment to the existing website.’
The AJ’s sister title Architectural Review was named Non-Weekly Magazine of the Year.
The AJ received a total four nominations to the awards which recognise high quality built environment journalism.
AJ news reporter Merlin Fulcher was shortlisted in the Young Journalist of the Year category for the second year running. The judges said: ‘His exclusive stating there were still projects available to architects on the Olympic site must have been welcome news to his readers.’
Earlier this year, AJ editor Christine Murray was shortlisted in the Business & Professional Magazines category of the highly prestigious British Society of Magazine Editor’s annual awards.
The win came exactly 12 months after Olcayto was named IBP Features Writer of the Year.
