New Practices #62: I V Levens

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone, either through choice or redundancy

I V Levens Dunbar, East Lothian

Founded: August 2010

Main people: Iain Vaughan Levens

Where have you come from? I was an associate at RMJM Edinburgh, and worked on large-scale education projects and campus design with two very large projects on site in Ireland, and others at the design stage. I have worked at Moxon Architects and before that at Richard Murphy Architects and Simpson & Brown Architects.

What work do you have? I have a couple of small residential projects in the office that involve the extension and remodelling of existing properties. I am also doing consultancy for other practices who need support but are cautious about employing staff full time, which works reasonably well. I also teach one day a week at Edinburgh College of Art.

What are your ambitions? The ambition is to develop the practice and not allow myself to be blinkered as to what the potential could be for the company. I consider myself lucky to have worked with and learned from very talented and creative people.

How optimistic are you? I am quite optimistic. It can be daunting at times but get your head down and work, be creative when looking for work and don’t be shy. The best advice I received was to get on with it; one can spend a long time waiting for the ‘right time’ to make a move. Oh, and say ‘yes’ to every offer of work.
