New Practices #61: AIR

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone, either through choice or redundancy

AIR London, W4

Founded: September 2010

Main people: Colm Tamney

Where have you come from? I spent 10 years at Foster + Partners as associate partner. I was involved in high-profile projects such as the Thomas Deacon Academy, One London Wall and a mixed-used complex in the centre of Budapest.

What work do you have? A number of residential projects. Our experience on major education and commercial projects has helped us to develop strong relationships with consultants, contractors and designers. We are largely obtaining work through our contacts and will also take part in competitions.

What are your ambitions? We hope to keep the practice ‘lean and keen’. AIR is a hard-working team, and by continuously aiming to exceed the expectations of our clients, we hope to receive referrals for new projects. We intend to build up a loyal client base across different sectors and also to develop relationships with major contractors to work collaboratively and deliver sustainable buildings.

How optimistic are you? Starting up in the current economic climate requires a certain willingness to take risks, which in turn requires optimism. People recognise quality and as a small practice, we are able to be very client-focused and thus keep our standards high. Continuing our dialogue with industry peers is also essential in keeping our finger on the pulse.
