The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone, either through choice or redundancy

Main people: Dan Newport and Rob Hyde

Where have you come from?
Dan worked with Ian Simpson Architects for six years and was a director of Cheshire Architects. Rob has worked with Austin-Smith:Lord and Stephen Hodder. We teach at the Birmingham and Manchester schools of architecture.

What work do you have? We’re fortunate to have a varied workload, ranging from kitchen extensions to a 26-unit new-build residential scheme. This is balanced out with some educational and civic refurbishment work, which is a market we want to expand into despite the recent public funding cuts.

What are your ambitions? At the moment we’re happy to keep things tight, minimising overheads and remaining competitive. Eventually, we’d like to expand to around 10 people, which is large enough to take on bigger projects but not so large as to lose the personal involvement. But the first thing on the agenda is to get a decent website up and running.

How optimistic are you? We see the recession as an opportunity. It’s forced us to think in ways that we wouldn’t have previously considered and to re-evaluate the skills we can provide as architects. There’s work out there if you’re prepared to go and look for it.
