Maccreanor Lavington to bring 'Accordia' to Barnet

Maccreanor Lavington is set to ‘replicate’ its Stirling Prize-winning practice Accordia housing development in Stanmore, north London

Although not ‘designed for the higher end of the market’ like the Cambridgeshire award-winner, the new 279-home Evolution South scheme includes many of the design details and features of the Accordia development and will also use the same brick stock (see AJ 14.03.2013).

Construction work has just started on site on the project for Barratt West London which will transform the Stonegrove and Spur Road Estates and could complete as early as Janaury 2015.

According to the practice, its ‘transformational approach’ will ‘redefine the old-fashioned estate typology which…has suffered from an architecture and layout at odds with its surroundings and has become cut off from surrounding neighbourhoods, suffering rapid degeneration.’

It is claimed the designs have been influenced by the Garden City movement of the late 1800s.

Gavin Finnan of Maccreanor Lavington said: ‘Our design is a sensitive response to the existing landscape of mature trees, creating a new high density, low rise residential neighbourhood.’

‘It will provide 146 apartments, together with 147 terrace and courtyard houses forming legible tree-lined streets, and a new pocket park and playspace. The new layout repairs and reconnects the immediate urban grain.’

The scheme also features more than 2000m² of public space - the largest a central green space.
