Kevin McCloud defends architect in Swindon housing storm

  • Comment

Kevin McCloud’s Haboakus development company will continue to work with Glenn Howells Architects despite a range of problems with its RIBA Award-winning The Triangle housing project in Swindon

In a statement, the developer said it was ‘not in any way disappointed’ with the architect after a full-time surveyor as well as specialist tradesmen had to be hired to deal with construction complaints from residents.

Issues raised by occupants of the £4.2 million ‘environmentally responsible’ social housing development include water leaks, cracks in walls and ceilings and difficulties with doors and stairs.

It is hugely upsetting that residents have had to bear the brunt of the problems

Haboakus – which developed the 3,465m² project in a joint venture with housing association the GreenSquare Group – said that contractor Willmott Dixon and the association ‘were working together to resolve the issues’.

In a statement the company admitted it was ‘hugely upsetting that residents have had to bear the brunt of the problems’.

It said: ‘The build of the scheme was in the hands of the construction team, appointed through a design and build process. We cannot go into detail about the position with the contractor.’

It added: ‘With regard to Glenn Howells Architects I can confirm that we are absolutely, categorically NOT in any way disappointed with any aspect of their performance or design.

‘On the contrary, we are actively seeking opportunities to work with them in the future and look forward to building on our very productive and enjoyable working relationship.’

The Triangle – Haboakus’s premier project – received a RIBA South West Sustainability Award last week.
