[FIRST LOOK] Featherstone Young has been given the green light for this extension to a day centre for an East End homeless charity
The scheme for the Tower Hamlets-based Providence Row, which celebrates its 150th Anniversary this year, will sit within an existing courtyard, opposite the existing Dellow Day Centre and will contain a new art centre and laundry house.
Sarah Featherstone, director and co-founder of the recently formed Featherstone Young (formerly Featherstone Associates) said: ’This project is an opportunity to streamline and add to an amazing centre, which provides crucial support and services to homeless people and those in danger of becoming homeless.’
According to the practice, the project will ‘strengthen connections’ with the main centre by adding a new permeable facade, providing essential visibility for staff.
A spokesman said: ‘This facade is an expansive glass screen at ground level acting to draw the courtyard into the main hall. Here the homeless people can be under cover and warm, whilst they wait to use the laundry and collect new clothes.
‘A ‘zigzag ribbon-wall’ directs movement at the ground floor in a cyclical route. Clear, uncluttered access and routes are paramount and good visibility assists surveillance in a sensitive and unobtrusive way.’
The building will boast a green roof, ‘animated with colourful, funnel-type roof-lights’.
Construction is due to start on site this Spring (2010).
