Hellman files #175

  • Comment

A trawl through Hellman’s archives, in which we uncover gems that are as relevant now as they were then

This AJ cartoon from 24.04.68 was already raising the question of morality and architecture, and whether architects should avoid serving regimes with dodgy human rights records. Any prestigious building in these countries is used politically to promote the oppressive regime. The other factor is that the architectural profession has no moral compass. The RIBA/ARB’s toothless codes of practice have no jurisdiction over architectural morality. No practice would be struck off for designing, say, a concentration camp.
