Hellman files #170

A trawl through Hellman’s archives, in which we uncover gems that are as relevant now as they were then

My Lord Rogers is reviving the campaign to save the Smithsons’ 1972 Neo-brutalist Robin Hood Gardens in Poplar.

This AJ cartoon from 03.07.08 shows DCMS minister Margaret Hodge in Miley Cyrus wrecking ball mode refusing to list the housing, and branding it ‘not fit for purpose’ despite a petition signed by hundreds of architects.

In 2009 the then culture secretary, one Andy Burnham, slapped a five-year immunity from listing order on the famous ‘streets in the air’ (aka access balconies).

Current plans would replace the neglected blocks with bland anodyne private housing, thus reversing the famous Robin Hood dictum ‘steal from the rich to give to the poor’.
