Hellman files #161

  • Comment

A trawl through Hellman’s archives, in which we uncover gems that are as relevant now as they were then

This AJ cartoon from 13.11.74 follows the Labour government’s attempt to tackle the housing crisis by promoting low-cost standardised shells for completion by owners. It came to nought. Forty years on, the Coalition advocates similar starter homes based on ‘exemplars’ or National Design Templates. This has been criticised by some architects as churning out cheap ‘generic’ dwellings that ignore the local context. Spec builders, of course, already have their exemplar – it’s called ‘boring and outdated’.
