Doing the Modernist twist

The Manchester Modernist Society has started to compile a modern A to Z of the city – including everything ‘from Aldine to Zochonis’

A new building will be added for a letter every week as the group celebrate 20th-century architecture in Greater Manchester, countering the notion of the city as all-Victorian.

Featured on the list is Salford’s 1960s Aldine House on New Bailey Street,George Best’s ‘groovy’ house by Frazer Crane (built in 1970 for the footballer) and the now-demolished Bernard House.

A special mention from Astragal goes to the considerably less glam abattoir and crematorium featured on the list. ‘When we get to Z,’ the organisers threaten, ‘we’ll just go back to the beginning and start all over again.’ This one could run and run…
