Such a pity that this forward thinking and innovative stadium should be turned down.
The local incinerator gets approval despite its negative impact and this great scheme gets rejected.
Vauxhall is a dump and the the bus station is practically the only decent thing thats happened here in the last 30 years. before it was built the bus system was chaos with bus stops all over the place and the new proposals will bring that back I moved here in 1988 well before it was built and all the development plans have been extremely poor if non existent with developers just having a feeding frenzy on the back of the embassy moving here.
Local groups have been trying hard to put alternatives to the powers that be, but our voices have not been listened too. Kate Hoey is absolutely right this is about a stitch up with Lambeth council over the island site which should really be in the public realm and not given over to the kind of development that is being proposed at all.
Who has advised Tracey Crouch not to list this building? Presumably the developers who stand to make lots of money out of the site. Could the 20th Century society organise an open day with the residents and get as many people there as possible. There is so much support in the profession for this listing but also from the general public. This period of Architecture is becoming interesting to young people too as proven by the Facebook page The Brutalism Appreciation Society which has nearly 20 thousand members! Please keep the pressure up. And apart from the architectural value Kate Mackintosh is right it will mean more housing lost to the buy to let landlord and the foreign investor!
Does anyone else think this event is out of their price range?
As an Architect with small practice its a large amount of money to spend on a dinner. I would love to go along but wont be doing so this year. Jane Opher
