Danish-based 3XN completes huge ‘whirlpool shaped’ aquarium

[FIRST LOOK] The Museum of Liverpool’s original architect 3XN has completed this huge aquarium in Copenhagen

Named the Blue Planet, the 10,000m2 new aquarium 8km from the city centre has replaced an existing aquarium built in 1939.

Shaped like a large whirlpool, the façade is covered in aluminium shingles, and the shape continues into the surrounding landscape.

The building is entered through a circular foyer, which leads visitors to the various exhibition spaces.

Kim Herforth Nielsen, creative director at 3XN said: ‘Our wish was to bring our visitors all the way down to the world of the fish. Therefore, the design of The Blue Planet is based on the story about water and life under the sea. We visualise the construction as a whirlpool which draws visitors into the depths to the fascinating experiences waiting among fish and sea animals from all over the world.’

Flemming Frandsen, chairman on Denmark’s aquarium added: ‘Our ambition is to welcome 700,000 guests each year, thus being one of Denmark’s five largest tourist attractions. Now, we have an aquarium, which compares to the world elite of aquariums and that brings us close to the biology of the sea and strengthens our interest in natural science’.

3XN originally won the competition to design the aquarium in 2007. Construction began on site in 2010, and it has taken more than two years to complete.
