Leeds City Council is on the hunt for an architect for a £12.7 million regeneration of the West Yorkshire Playhouse
Planned to complete in 2019, the project will overhaul the high-profile Quarry Hill venue which opened as successor to the Leeds Playhouse in 1990 and features two auditoriums.
The planned redevelopment comes as the city prepares to bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2023.
Potential improvements include enlarging the restaurant and creating a new entrance and glazed extension facing ACME’s £130million Victoria Gate retail-led development.
An application has been submitted to Arts Council England for £6.6 million in funding and, if the bid is successful, the council will contribute a further £4.9 million towards the scheme.
Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake said: ‘The appointment of a multi-disciplinary design team will allow the council and the West Yorkshire Playhouse to move forward with our exciting partnership as we work together to secure grant funding needed to transform the theatre into a flagship 21st Century cultural destination.’
She continued: ‘Having this team in place will mean we will be on the front foot should the bid for Arts Council funding be successful, which will in turn allow detailed design work to start as soon as possible.
‘The Playhouse is an integral part of our city’s rich cultural landscape and together we hope this appointment will be one of the first major steps on the road to redeveloping the theatre so it can continue to be one of the cornerstones of our city’s bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2023.’
