Legendary Glamping Wales is holding a competition for a series of portable cabins to be situated in scenic locations across Wales
The anonymous contest, open to architects, designers and artists, seeks innovative proposals for £11,000 mobile units suitable for overnight ‘glamping’.
‘Glamping’ – luxury camping – has introduced hotel-style amenities to the traditional outdoor pursuit.
The brief says: ‘Applicants are expected to design a high-quality, “self-contained” glamping accommodation unit, and the awarded designs will be developed to form a completely unique mobile hotel.
‘The “pop-up” hotel will appear in three different, unique and stunning locations in Wales, including a private beach and historic sites of significance.’
The project is backed by the Welsh government, and coincides with Visit Wales’s 2017 Year of Legends cultural programme, aimed at boosting tourism. Earlier this month the programme launched a contest to design and build two £500,000 landmarks commemorating Welsh national legends .
Proposals for the cabins should make use of Welsh materials and must be suitable for transportation on a 2.7m-wide, 5.7m-long and 3.4m-high chassis, but may include additional balconies and awnings outside the footprint.
The cabins should also include a shower, compost toilet, king-sized bed and mattress, basin, seating area and wood burning stove.
Three winning teams will be announced in November and receive £1,500 each as well as having two units of their design produced to create a six-unit pop-up hotel prototype.
Applications may be completed in English or Welsh and should include up to two A3 boards. The deadline is 9am on 31 October.
