Treasury Galleries for the Science Museum in London

The Science Museum in London has launched a search for architects to revamp two of its major permanent collections

Details of the project to fit out two £25 million new galleries emerged earlier this year.

Tim Molloy, creative director at the Science Museum at the time said: ‘The skills we will need are many and various. I certainly don’t have any fear of small practices and it is open to all those who think they can contribute.’

‘I’m interested in teams as well as individuals,’ he said, adding: ‘The brief is for two huge permanent galleries defined by being object rich and contemporary installations so we will need software developers and interactive designers [too].’

The new ‘Treasury Galleries’ will be housed in the museums Central Block, first used to celebrate the Festival of Britain.

The exhibits will display items from the museum’s collection which focus on the making of modern science and communication.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the Science Museum £346,000 to kickstart the project.

The new galleries are the first stage of the £100 million Wilkinson Eyre masterplanned Museum of the Future redevelopment scheme.

Work on the Museum of the Future project will carry on in ‘parallel’ according to Molloy.

He said: ‘The timescales will depend on getting the money but we are hoping the HLF grant will attract more confidence.’
