Swindon Borough Council (SBC) is on the hunt for a design team to deliver new public realm and landscaping in Wichelstowe on the edge of the Wiltshire town
The winning team will work with the local authority to develop detailed plans for new public realm and landscaping across the ambitious urban extension.
Masterplanned by LDA Design – the Wichelstowe expansion aims to deliver 3,600 new homes on farmland between Swindon Old Town and the M4. Some 800 homes have already been constructed in the area since the development started in 2006.
According to the contract notice: ‘The supplier will be required to develop the detailed design and oversee delivery of public realm and landscaping areas across the Wichelstowe site.
‘The supplier will work as part of a design team including civil engineers, ecologists and in some cases artists in order to provide comprehensive, proactive and commercially aware public realm and landscaping design support. For landscape and public realm led schemes the consultant will lead the design team and act as principal designer.’
Earlier this year SBC’s regeneration arm, Forward Swindon launched an international search for an architect to deliver 150 new homes on a pair of green fields straddling a disused canal.
The new homes on Wichelstowe land parcels 2 and 3 will be the first residential units delivered within the Middle Wichel District Centre, where a Waitrose Store opened two years ago.
PRP was appointed earlier this year to draw up a design code for the new district centre, which will feature housing alongside a new primary school, secondary school, restaurants, health facilities, retail and a hotel.
The winner of the latest public realm contract will initially focus on Wichelstowe’s District Centre Public Square, the Northern Gateway and the first phase of landscaping and habitat improvements.
Documents must be requested by 4pm on 7 February and the deadline for applications is 12noon on 8 February.
