An open ideas competition has been launched to design 20 ‘cost effective, green and beautiful’ self-build homes on a 2,000m² urban site
Organised by the National Custom & Self-Build Association, the ‘Self Build in the City’ contest is judged by Kevin McCloud and features a £5,000 prize fund.
According to the brief: ‘Self Build in the City is a unique ideas competition - open to anyone - to design an innovative complex of ‘self build friendly’ homes on a typical urban site.
‘The competition is being run to prove that it is possible to build low cost homes in the City, and that they can also be a very attractive and sustainable too.’
Each home must be capable of being constructed for less than £75,000. The budget includes professional fees, insurance and warranties but excludes land costs.
The ideas competition is open to everyone and there is no commitment to build the winning scheme.
